A popular Game Reserve is the Wildlife Refuge south of Lake Murray. About Thanksgiving Day starts the Deer season......... and if you are a photographer, be sure to take your camera.

Jiggs, the DEER SEASON is like a religious holliday in Oklahoma and I say that because the schools have a vacation period the same time. It starts the Saturday before Thanksgiving Day. I can't remember how many vacations I have spent on the Deer Range south of Lake Murray. I believe if memory serves me right, some 7,000 acres set aside for this purpose. First, I lived in a tent each year, then progressed to a Travel Trailer which was really living, except I had to do my own cooking. But I enjoyed the 6 or 7 days I spent there whether I got a deer or not. It was just getting out in the quiet of Nature. I usually spent the time with a cousin of mine and we did work hard to get us a deer. Monroe was the name of the Ranger that was there when I first started going in there and then he became the caretaker of the area. Its a great place.

I've never fished Lake Murray. How are the Crappie, Sand Bass & Catfish? The fishing is great for all of the above in their season...crappie early in the year, sand bass and stripers mid summer season and catfish, late summer and early fall...you will enjoy it all.... and since you are not a resident, there's the Lake Murry Lodge for meals and nights for a good relaxing rest.... or you might prefer one of the quaint cabins set aside for pure pleasure. It's just a great place to vacation.

Thanks. Actually, I'm looking to move back in a few years and I want to be near a lake.
The absolute best Crappie fishing I have ever experienced was on Eufaula, in mid September, three years ago... Night time. Lights in water. Shad schooled around the boat. Ran out of bait. Used dip net to scoop shad out of the water to bait hooks. Ran out of beer... Ran out of darkness about the time we ran out of live well & cooler space to put fish in...
I returned to Missouri with half a freezer full.
