The State of Oklahoma is famous for many things....Its pioneers, history, great men and women...and even the song "Oklahoma" alludes to the waving fields of grain, but nothing has been said about its cash crop of Pecans. Here we will try to tell and show you some of the benifits of this crop. The Indians were probably partly responsible for many of the pecan trees in the state, then farmers and ranchers could see the benifits of the Pecans and now it has grown to a "several million dollar crop". Not every year is as bountiful as this year is. Pecans are coming in to this one processing plant in Tishimingo, Oklahoma by huge dump truck loads. Years ago, share cropers picked pecans "on the halves" and made some good money. Now they have "Shaking Machines" that rattle the branches on pecan trees and cause the nuts to fall to the ground, where they are harvested by another machine, then loaded into dump trucks and hauled to the processing plant where they are paid for their efforts. These pictures show, the trucks....the conveyers that pick up the nuts, send them to the cleaner, then it takes people to pick out anything that is not a pecan before they are conveyed again to huge nylon sacks, that are moved by a fork lift and made ready for a semi-trailer to haul them to their destination.
This has been a bountiful year...an abundant year for pecans. The harvest will continue through March according to employees at the processing plant who work l2 and l3 hours a day just to keep ahead.
And if the trucks come in soon enough, these 2,000 pound sacks of pecans will be hauled away to make room for more of the same. A good grade of pecans are bringing more per pound than ever.
